Writing Day (3 of 3)
This is the last day for writing your proposal in class. The proposal is not due until Monday, October 9th so that you have some time to discuss plans as a family and make arrangements to use a computer at school if you need to do so.
*Next week Monday, we will begin our new instructional unit, ENERGY!
The Fizz Inflator Lab
We had fun time this week with the Fizz Inflator Lab! Students selected their own question, designed their own experiment, collected and analyzed data, and wrote a claim-evidence-reasoning explanation. At this point, their lab packets should be complete. If there are any portions that are not done, they should be complete for homework this weekend.
Tentative plans for September 18-22
Present and Defend our Fizz Inflator Investigations*
*As students present, they will turn in their completed lab packets. The Data Analysis section will be graded for understanding. All other sections will be graded for completion. Students can find the score sheet for the lab in Google Classroom.
Finish any presentations if necessary.
Review for the QPOEE quiz
Homework: Study for tomorrow's quiz! (Use your foldable and the Science Starters from the last few days. There is also a quizlet available if you wish to use it.)
QPOEE Quiz! This quiz will cover all of the success criteria for the single learning target in this mini-unit. The learning target and well as a link to a Quizlet set can be found in Google Classroom.
Begin IRP topic selection process
Continue with IRP Research (Day 2 of 4)
More research and group meetings
Each Friday, I will post the tentative plans for the upcoming week here, in this blog section. Please know that these plans are "optimistic", meaning that I plan for a little more than I anticipate that we be able to accomplish. It is very important to respond to students' needs so if I find that more time is needed for an activity or if re-teaching would be helpful before a test or quiz, I may "bump" things back a day in the plans. This means that if you check the list on Monday, the activity that was scheduled for Friday might not actually happen on Friday. I will do my very best to keep the list updated in a timely fashion so that students and parents will have an accurate reference throughout the week.
Monday, September 11:
1. Complete the Fizz Inflator Knowledge Probe (jigsaw sharing of articles)
2. Determine your testable question
3. Complete the following sections in your Fizz Inflator packet
Tuesday, September 12:
1. Data Collection
Wednesday, September 13 (shortened class periods - early release day):
1. Complete Data Collection as needed
2. Data Analysis
*HW = Finish Data Analysis Section if you don't complete it in class.
Thursday, September 14:
1. Data Analysis Lesson (slideshow)
2. Review and Revise your Data Analysis Section based on the lesson
Friday, September 15:
1. Complete Fizz Inflator Lab (and turn in)
*HW = Finish Fizz Inflator Lab packet if you don't get it done in class.
This week in class, we focused on the scientific Habits of Mind. These are characteristics that we encourage all year long in our students while they are thinking and acting like scientists. Students took a short vocabulary quiz about these words in class on Friday. Scores will be entered into Infinite Campus over the weekend. We also started preparing for our first experiment, the Fizz Inflator Investigation, that will begin on Monday.
Thanks to all who were able to make it out to open house last night. It was great to meet you face to face! If you weren't able to attend, I've included a link to the slideshow that was presented below. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me anytime. Thank you!

Is this page just for parents and guardians?
No! This blog is for anyone who wants to know what is going on in our class (that should include students too!). Just because the language is written with parents/guardians in mind, that doesn't mean that students won't benefit from checking in with this blog. It just means that parents don't have to wade through all of the resources posted under the instructional unit section of this site. Likewise, that section of the website isn't meant to be a "parent-free" zone. Parents/guardians can use the resources posted there to help their student or just to stay in touch with what's going on in the classroom.
